Myth debunked: capitals are NOT always better to live in — data from 5,570 cities prove it

If you believe that Brazilian capitals are always the best places to live, data from 5,570 municipalities analyzed by Score de Cidades has a surprise for you. The city with the highest HDI in Brazil is São Caetano do Sul (SP), with 0.862 — an inland city in Greater São Paulo with 165,000 inhabitants. The second place? Águas de São Pedro (SP), another inland city, with an HDI of 0.854.
The myth that “capital is always better” does not withstand data analysis. The average HDI of the 27 Brazilian capitals is 0.777. The average of the 5,455 inland municipalities is 0.659 — a real difference exists, but it is not absolute. And at the upper extremes, inland cities dominate.
