Rio de Janeiro vs Lisbon: Who Wins on Quality of Life Indicators in 2026?

Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro share the same language, the same colonial heritage and the same love of the sea. But when the data speaks, the differences leap out: Rio de Janeiro has an HDI of 0.799 and GDP per capita of R$ 58,000 (about US$ 11,600 in PPP), while Portugal registers an HDI of 0.866 and per capita income of US$ 34,000 in PPP — three times more.
