São Paulo Has Higher GDP Per Capita Than Buenos Aires — But Argentina Wins on HDI

São Paulo generates R$ 72,000 per capita annually — a value that, in purchasing power parity (PPP), equals approximately US$ 14,400, surpassing Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital, in gross income per person. The paradox? Argentina as a country registers an HDI of 0.849, while São Paulo, with all its wealth as a metropolis, scores an HDI of 0.805. Brazil's richest city loses to its neighboring country in quality of life measured by the Human Development Index. How to explain this?
The comparison matters because São Paulo is frequently described as the economic engine of Brazil, responsible for over 10% of national GDP. If São Paulo were an independent country, it would be Latin America's largest economy in absolute terms — but in per capita income and social well-being, it would fall below Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. This data reveals the profound internal inequality of the metropolis and the challenge of converting wealth into quality of life for all 11.4 million inhabitants.
