Belo Horizonte Has Higher HDI Than Colombia — Few Brazilians Know It

Belo Horizonte has an HDI of 0.810 — higher than Colombia as a whole, which marks 0.752. While the Andean country of 52 million inhabitants is frequently celebrated for its economic turnaround in recent decades, the capital of Minas Gerais quietly builds human development indicators superior to it. With per capita GDP of R$ 46,000 and a population of 2,315,560 inhabitants, BH proves that Brazil has cities that compete on equal footing — or better — with entire countries in Latin America.
This data matters because the dominant narrative places Colombia as a “success story” in Latin America, thanks to the decline of drug trafficking, the Medellín boom, and post-2000 economic growth. Belo Horizonte, by contrast, rarely appears in international rankings. Data from UNDP and the World Bank show that the capital of Minas Gerais deserves more attention.
