Goiânia surpasses Mexico's HDI — the paradox of Brazil's agribusiness capital in 2026

Goiânia has HDI of 0.799 — superior to Mexico (0.774), a country of 130 million inhabitants that is the 15th largest economy in the world. The capital of Goiás, with 1,437,366 inhabitants and GDP per capita of R$ 42,000, surpasses the Mexican nation in human development — even with GDP per capita in PPP of only US$ 8,400, against US$ 21,000 in Mexico. It is the paradox of agribusiness: the city that feeds Brazil has better human indicators than some of the countries it feeds.
Goiânia rarely appears in international comparisons. The city is better known for university sertanejo music, fat cattle and agribusiness than for social indicators. But 2026 data reveal a metropolis with HDI that surpasses Mexico, Colombia, Peru, El Salvador and virtually all Latin American countries, except Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. This is Brazil that the world does not see.
